In order to build tissue and produce heat, you breathe in oxygen and it is carried to your cells. As this oxygen serves its purpose in metabolism, some of it is given off in charged forms (free radicals) that can react with your cells and actually damage them. Luckily, your body also naturally produces compounds (antioxidants) to neutralize these to minimize damage. A balanced diet with fruits and vegetables will also give you a lot of extra antioxidants to help out in this process. It is unclear how much this extra dose will help minimize cell damage, but you are unlikely to notice.
