The Science Behind Hydroxycut Brazilian Acai with Green Coffee Extract

When it comes to the science of business, the makers of Hydroxycut have got it down.  With celebrity sponsors and mass distribution in drug stores across the country and through online retailers, they can afford to make pretty cheap and very profitable products.  However, when it comes to the science of weight loss for their Hydroxycut Brazilian Acai with Green Coffee Extract diet pill, the formula is pretty weak.  The company cites only two studies on ingredients in their product:

  1. “In one 60-day study on Green Coffee Extract, subjects lost, on average, 10.95 lbs. versus an average of 5.40 lbs. for the placebo group. Both groups followed a calorie-reduced diet.

Not too shabby. Almost twice the weight loss, though they don’t mention how much extract was used or how many people participated.

  1. “In another, 8-week study funded by the makers of Brazilian Acai with Green Coffee Extract, subjects using the same key ingredient lost an average of 3.7 lbs. vs. subjects using a placebo who lost an average of 1.25 lbs.”

Needless to say, this study is a lot less impressive.  Even discounting that they don’t tell us how many people participated, losing 3.7 pounds in 8 weeks isn’t exactly an accomplishment.  What is more is that the “key ingredient” they refer to is just plain caffeine.  In a number of studies we’ve see, pure caffeine has fared much better for weight loss.

Delivering the caffeine equivalent about almost two cups of coffee in one dose, you can imagine what sort of side effects you might experience drinking four cups of coffee per day.  Those sensitive to stimulants may find this causes them some nervousness and potentially sleeplessness if they take the second dose too late in the afternoon.

Does Hydroxycut Brazilian Acai with Green Coffee Extract Work?

Acai is a rather expensive ingredient because of its popularity, but not THAT expensive and overall there is no evidence that Brazilian Acai with Green Coffee Extract will result in any significant weight loss.  In fact, the evidence shows that you can’t expect more than about 10 pounds over the course of 60 days. Would you pay $136 to weight 10 pounds less two months from now, knowing you’d still have to diet and exercise?
